The sun casts a golden glow over the landscape, and the moment feels like it has been plucked straight from a dream. This is the perfect place to ask one of the most important questions of your life. Where to propose in Bergen
Mount Ulriken: Okay… if you’re dreaming of those «WOW, is this actually real?!» kind of photos, Ulriken is hard to beat. It’s the highest of Bergen’s seven mountains, and the views are absolutely incredible. The cable car takes us to the top in just ten minutes, and from there we have Bergen at our feet. If you’re up for a little adventure, this location is pure magic.
A relaxed city vibe: Maybe mountains aren’t your thing, and that’s totally okay. We can keep it simple and wander around the city centre instead. Beautiful streets, cool cafés, nice architecture and those little unexpected corners that make Bergen so charming. It’s relaxed, effortless and perfect if you want photos that feel natural, stylish and very *you*.
The rugged coastline: Think dramatic rocks, the sound of the waves, salty sea air and landscapes that are beautifully raw. It’s such a unique backdrop, and it gives your photos a completely different feel.
I also know a few hidden gems around Bergen that most people never find, so if you’re not sure where to go, don’t worry, I have plenty of favourite spots that I can suggest to you.
How a surprise proposal shoot works
The whole point is that only one of you knows. That means a few things need to be settled in advance so nothing feels staged on the day.
The exact spot. Not just the mountain, but where on it. A specific rock, a bend in the path, a corner of the viewpoint.
The time. Light in Bergen changes enormously through the year, so the right hour in June is not the right hour in November.
How you will arrive. Which direction you come from, and roughly when, so I am in position before you get there.
What happens straight after. Most couples want a short session together once the ring is on and the shaking has stopped. It is worth deciding beforehand whether you want that, so the moment does not end too abruptly.
What about the weather?
It rains in Bergen. Often. If you are coming from abroad with fixed travel dates, plan for it rather than hope against it.
Rain is not the end of a proposal shoot. Low cloud on Ulriken can be extraordinary, and wet stone holds light beautifully. What it does change is timing and location, so it helps to have a second spot agreed in advance. I have written more about working with rain rather than against it.
When to come
Bergen sits at 60 degrees north, so the difference between summer and winter is extreme. In June the light lasts almost all evening and you can shoot late. In December the usable daylight is short, and the golden hour arrives in the early afternoon.
